Shayne Lysaght With His Contra Powered Sensation
CVRCMAS Camden Valley January - 16th 2022
Competition Report
Following the “annus horribilis” which was 2021, with Covid and weather destroying the Pattern Flying calendar, it was a welcome change to welcome our members to the first competition of 2022.
A fine summer morning and relaxed restrictions saw a good field at Camden looking forward to the first one-day contest of 2022. As always, the field was in fine shape, thanks to the local members, but unfortunately, one of the last constraints of the pandemic meant that we were denied the usual Camden hospitality, and had to fall back on “BYO”!
We had 15 entrants, with one Sportsman, two Advanced, and four each in Expert, F3A and Masters. The majority of the usual suspects were present, including Tim Voight up from Nowra, Con Kyriakides from Newcastle, Rod O’ Neil from Mudgee, and Peter Nieuwenhuizen, who was visiting from the States. Shayne Lysaght also attended, following a long absence. We also had a couple of visitors come to observe, Basil Smith from Hornsby, and John Lysaght, together with the support team of Meaghan Voight and Lori O’ Neil.
The weather was very hot and humid, with a quite tricky in-blowing and changeable wind, which served to keep the competitors in the lower classes honest. However, the competition proceeded smoothly, with 3 rounds completed by all competitors.
First up were F3A, with 4 entries, where Peter took the win from Kahl Eckersley, closely followed (by only 2.22 normalised points!) by Brian McGowan, with Tom Collinge in 4th. No promotion or retention points were scored.
Advanced were next up, with the lack of practice showing in the scores, with Con Kyriakides winning from Alastair, with plenty of “donuts” being registered. No promotion points were scored.
Tim Voight flew his new Allure in anger for the first time in Sportsman, and got over the line with his 3rd promo! Welcome to Advanced Tim!
In Expert, Rod O’ Neil gave a typical dominant performance, to win, also gaining his 3rd promo, (much to the relief of the remaining Experts!) He will be joining the crew in F3A from next competition. Brian McFarlane finished 2nd, followed by Gavin Fitz-Henry and Felix Nieuwenhuizen.
Masters saw the resumption of a longstanding rivalry between Shayne Lysaght and David McFarlane, with Shayne narrowly winning 2 rounds, and David the other, to give Shayne the win by less than 10 normalised points. The minor placings were taken up by Jason Arnold and Bill Garrod, (flying his backup Arbalest, after the unfortunate loss of his Scorpio).
Once again many thanks to the Camden Club for the use of their field, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Fletchers’ Lane competition on 19th and 20 February in Nowra.
